RAMS’ teenage ace George Makepeace-Cubitt is set for his England Under 20s Six Nations debut at home to Wales tomorrow (Friday) night (7.15pm).
The in-form full-back, who grabbed his first tries for his boyhood club during the most recent National One game against Taunton Titans, is included on the bench for the fixture at Bath’s Recreation Ground.
Makepeace-Cubitt, who rejoined Rams from London Irish in the summer, is the only National One-based player in the 23-man squad, with all others bar Racing 92 second row Junior Kpoku – previously with Saracens and Exeter Chiefs Academies before his move across the English Channel back in November – attached to Premiership sides.
Newcastle Falcons and Northampton Saints lead the way with four each, while Gloucester, Sale Sharks, Exeter Chiefs, Saracens and Bath have two players and Harlequins, Bristol Bears and Leicester Tigers one.
It is believed the last non-Premiership player picked for England U20s was Bedford Blues’ wing Josh Bassett more than a decade ago.
Makepeace-Cubitt’s selection means he will be unavailable as Rams return to National One action at Bishop’s Stortford on Saturday (3pm).
His side head to Silver Leys having been knocked off top spot after new leaders Chinnor edged out Sedgley Park 38-36 in their re-arranged fixture last Saturday, and the Thame men could extend their lead when they host Rosslyn Park under the Friday Night Lights.
Rams currently sit four points back but have responded well from losing at Chinnor in their final game of last year, starting 2024 with victories against Sedgley, Rosslyn Park and Taunton.
Stortford, meanwhile, who have been stalwarts of the league since gaining promotion in 2017 and enjoyed a best-ever sixth-placed finish last term, have endured a five-match losing streak which has seen them slip into the bottom two.
*RAMS Colts will play a National Cup quarter-final for the first time since 2011 when they welcome Ivybridge to Old Bath Road on Sunday (2pm).
A fantastic 13-5 victory against Old Patesians in the last 16 a fortnight ago was a fourth win in the competition for Dave Cox’s side, after they previously beat Marlow 40-19, Beaconsfield 36-15 and Marlborough 45-5.
Ivybridge are a force to be reckoned with, however, the Devonians having defeated some of the best of the south-west in Wadebridge Camels (25-10), Brixham (33-21), Redruth (21-15) and Chew Valley (27-12) to set-up a mouth-watering battle.
Entry is free as the sides battle for a semi-final spot.
