A 90 year old family butchers in Caversham is the latest shop to be put forward for a Reading Retail Award.
Jennings of Caversham was nominated in the My Favourite Shop category by Jane Bickerstaffe.
In 1922 Leo Jennings set up the butchers in a small space on Prospect Street, just down the road from the company's main outlet which was bought in the 1960s.
In 1964 Leo died, leaving his five sons to run the business as the Jennings Bros.
By the early '80s Jennings had expanded to five retail shops around Reading and had found a new focus in supplying the catering trade.
Nigel Tatty, shop manager of Jennings and employee for forty years, said: “I think what stands us out is the care and attention of the staff and the excellent products we provide. It is also a very friendly shop to be in.
“Our biggest selling point is our fresh meat and game. It is all produced in and around the area, and comes from fifty miles away at most.”
Today Jennings, which still has three members of the family involved in the day-to-day running of the business, is widely recognised as one of the town's go-to-butchers and is a previous recipient of a Reading Retail Award.
Mrs Bickerstaffe, a regular in Jennings, said: “It is wonderful meat. The staff are always friendly and professional and will help with any request. They definitely know their butterfly cuts from skirt and shank.”
The Reading Retail Awards are in their seventh year. Nominations close on July 11 with the awards ceremony at the Hilton Hotel on September 17. Nominations can be made and votes cast at http://www.readingretailawards.co.uk/
