Students at the University of Reading got up close and personal with snakes and lizards to help them ‘unwind’ during their exam period.
Ten reptiles including a 15-pound (6.8kg) reticulated python visited the University campus to be held and petted by some 300 students. The event was organised by the Reading University Students’ Union as part of their RUSU says Relax campaign to help students find ways to destress while revising for their end of year tests.
Pip Oppenheimer, Welfare Officer at the Reading University Students’ Union, said: “Exams period is an extremely stressful and exhausting time of year for students. Students invest large amounts of time in study and can forget to look after themselves properly, which can have negative implications on their physical and mental health.
“This year’s RUSU says Relax, in response to the negative impact exam period can have on students has been the biggest ever, with the reptile zoo being only one of many events organized this term.
“It’s been a joy seeing all the events being positively received, and I hope that RUSU says Relax this year has helped students stay healthy, be more productive and successful.”
Other animal-themed activities during the exam period included a puppy room and a mobile zoo; and students attended a variety of other events including mindfulness and exercise classes as well as study sessions across campus.
