MEMBERS of the community are hoping to buy a new defibrillator to honour the memory of a popular man after his sudden death.

Loyal Reading FC supporter Matthew Farrall died on April 20 and was remembered with a minute's applause during the final home game at the Madejski Stadium.

An online fundraising page has been set-up to purchase a new life-saving device, which will be installed at South Reading Community Centre on Northumberland Avenue.

Friends of Mr Farrall say the defibrillator will be a fitting legacy 'in the heart of the community for the heart of the community' and have set a target of £2,000.

Trisha Bennett, from Whitley Community Development Association, said: "He had many talents and an infectious enthusiasm for life.

"He was a hugely popular and instantly recognisable figure around town.

"A passionate champion of our town, culture, football team and several community projects and organisations, Matthew's love of life and a wonderful sense of humour shone through in everything he did.

"People have already been very generous and it is now possible to get more than one defibrillator."

Mr Farrall saw his first Royals match in December 1975 and fans were on their feet in the 49th minute of the Ipswich Town match to honour the lifelong supporter.

He lived in Whitley throughout his adult life and was a regular contributor to Explore Reading and the Whitley Pump on matters of arts, culture and food.

Ms Bennett added: "Matthew will be greatly missed by his partner Steph, his brothers and his many friends. Beyond them, so many others will miss his contribution to and enthusiasm for life in this town.

"South Reading Community Centre also houses the Whitely Museum and is becoming a focal point for local tales and legends.

"It is a fitting place for a defibrillator and will be a tribute for Matthew and the hard work he put into helping the museum."

Mr Farrall was also well known on the Berkshire cricket circuit and was a big supporter of the Reading Midweek Cricket League.
