The woman in the video, Katarzyna Szyc, later reported the incident to the police.
She said: "Some people told me that I didn’t do the right thing to pursuing the thief, that's the police's job but I care about my property and my street.
"We can’t expect everything done by police, sometimes we need to take responsibility!"
A Thames Valley Police spokesperson said: “An attempted car theft was reported to Thames Valley Police at around 7.30am (22/5) in Catherine Street, Reading.
“The investigation is ongoing. No arrests have been made at this time.”
Oner Savis, a resident on Catherine Street, added: “What she did was very dangerous but she did not just take care of her property, she also prevented stuff getting stolen from innocent hardworking people.
"I believe she is a real strong heroic person and she takes care of her neighbourhood."
