A motorist who was pulling onto the motorway at junction 11 noticed smoke coming from the front of his car and pulled over to raise the alarm at around 7.30am.
When firefighters arrived the silver Volvo V50 was well alight but despite the engine being destroyed the rest of the car was relatively unaffected.
Highways Agency officers diverted traffic around the smoking vehicle while fire crews worked.
The male owner, who was driving alone, was uninjured in the incident.
