Reading boss Ruben Selles has been left 'unhappy' as a 'misunderstanding' means the club are unable to enter the transfer market.

The Royals are the only club in the country yet to make a signing during the summer window due to the protracted takeover saga.

On Saturday, boss Selles had been told that the club could sign one player to replace winger Femi Azeez- who departed for Millwall last week.

However, 24 hours ahead of the transfer window slamming shut, it has been revealed that this is no longer the case.

"I got assured that if I let Femi go- and it was my decision also- then we could have a replacement immediately," Selles said. "It was a misunderstanding with the people communicating with the EFL and that was not true. Now, we cannot use that money or Femi’s wages, even if it’s a free agent.

"If the takeover happens and we get the green light, we should have not only Femi’s wages but also a little more budget to sign new players."

When quizzed further on the matter, with the club looking thin on the ground in the way of bodies, Selles added: "It is not an EFL problem, it is an internal problem. Somebody misunderstood the information so that is why I’m unhappy with that.

"When you allow that to happen- which I think was a good deal for the club and Femi- there are some moments when you should be able to get a replacement, get some contracts increased, an extra coach to improve the players or reinvest in the facilities. We cannot lose power and then not be able to replace. I’m not happy."

The window closes at 11pm on Friday, however free agents can be signed all year round.
