A brand new clothes shop has replaced a former footwear store on one of Reading's busiest central streets.

Since news broke of the footwear giant Footasylum's closure on Broad Street, many locals expressed their worry that shopping in the town centre is slowly dying out.

However, a new independent shop has set up camp in the old store selling authentic Indian clothing, head scarfs, and jewellery.

Reading Chronicle:

C and $ was first opened at the beginning of April and has seen booming success ever since, believed to be down to the lack of Indian clothes shops in the town centre.

Store worker and close friend of the manager Sangeeta Sangeeta said that C and $ are proud to have taken over a prime spot on Reading's high street.

Reading Chronicle:

"We are a new shop and are excited for what the future holds for us," she said. "We have all worked really hard to get to where we are now."

Mrs Sangeeta said that the store is primarily focussed on Indian fashion, selling head scarfs of every colour of the rainbow and other modest clothing.

They also sell handbags, jewellery, and other types of accessories.

Reading Chronicle:

"I'm not sure why we have chosen to name our shop C and $," Mrs Sangeeta said. "I guess we just liked the sound of it.

"The shop isn't too busy today but we have been busy since the start of April when we first opened our doors."

Mrs Sangeeta said all the staff at C and $ want the store to do well and thrive in Reading's busy town centre.

This comes as the former store Footasylum announced that it was closing for good with February 27 being its final day of business.

Huge red sales posters adorned its display windows that read 'Closing Down Sale' and 'Extra 20% off.'

Dozens of shoppers were seen filing through the doors since news broke of its closure to nab some last minute bargains.

The staff at the store confirmed Footasylum's imminent closure but did not disclose why the much loved addition to Broad Street is shutting for good.

"It wasn't our decision," they said. "We aren't sure what will happen to the staff in terms of being relocated. Today is the last day we are open."

This news comes as many shops in Reading town centre have sadly had to close up store, the death of the high saga sadly coming to fruition.
