Ray was vital to the establishment of the Farm Management Association, now the Institute of Agricultural Management. I believe he was tasked with assisting its development while a NAAS officer some 50 or more years ago. As such, he became a mentor to a generation of farmers and farm managers who were getting to grips with commercialising and professionalising what had been seen as a way of life. He worked with the industry and academics to inculcate a whole range of new ideas, practices and ways of thinking that have deeply influenced food production ever since. He tirelessly and patiently encouraged the development of FMA and I had the pleasure of chairing the Berkshire branch in the late 80s, of which he was a keen supporter. His quiet influence was enormous and the industry is in his debt.
