I was a pupil at Alfred Sutton from 1958 - 1965. I would also like to record my appreciation to Doctor Watson. He certainly was a no-nonsense and conscientious teacher. He got me through both "O" & "A" Level Economic History. As Chris Dunning said in his tribute, Dr. Watson never resorted to corporal punishment yet no-one was in any doubt of his control over a class. A threat of extra work was enough to remind anyone of that. He was held in great esteem.

I was privileged to have been taught O level history by "Doc" Watson in 1963. He was an outstanding teacher and I and I know all my contemporises still remember him after all these years with the greatest respect and affection. He was a great story teller of history - a no frills teacher - all he needed was a blackboard and a piece of chalk and he told us the great stories from the history syllabus we studied(Social and Economic History 1760 -1939). Needless to say his academic results were outstanding and although I went on to study Biological Science at university, history O level was my best result at O level and I have retained a great interest in the subject to this day. He had a quiet, dry sense of humour and although the class was full of "scallywags " - this was a class in which no one misbehaved , everyone was on task, and unusually for those times he never needed to resort to the cane or the slipper.
A great teacher - R.I.P Doc Watson! You will not be forgotten.

Dr Watson was a very well liked and respected teacher at Alfred Sutton, where I was a pupil in the late 1960's and early 1970's. His efforts enabled me to achieve the highest grade in my History O level, and gave me a lifelong love of History.
Rest in peace Dr Watson, you are fondly remembered as a totally dedicated teacher.
