The current production at The Mill at Sonning is a quartet of four short plays set in a plush suite at the Beverly Hills Hotel during the early 1970s.
Scene 1 saw a bickering divorced couple attempting to agree whether LA or New York would be the better location for their teenage daughter to grow up, scene 2 depicted a middle-aged business man trying to conceal his uncharacteristic indiscretion after waking up following a heavy night's drinking to find a completely inebriated call girl in his bed and his wife on her way to the suite in the lift, whilst scene 3 concerned a first-time Academy Award nominee and her bisexual husband, rating the chances of her receiving an Oscar. These first three scenes involved just two characters by cleverly mixing up the performers, whilst all were featured in the final scene that saw four good friends falling out over a simple accident.
Delightfully different characterisations from Jeffrey Holland, Jo Ross, Susan Skipper and Martyn Stanbridge brought out both the pathos and humour demanded by Neil Simon's witty dialogue (with one further non-speaking role performed by Chloe Holmes in scene 2).
The production runs until December 8. Tickets can be booked online at www.millatsonning.com or call 0118 969 8000.
