TODAY is the third hottest September day on recored according to Reading Univerity's meterologist.
Roger Brugge said the only hotter September day this late in the year was on September 19 1926 when the town was treated to a balmy 29.1C.
"After a minimum temperature overnight of 15C, the air temperature at
the University of Reading's weather station had risen to 27.7C by noon," he said.
"Such a temperature is remarkably high for the town at this time of year
and is the result of a very warm mass of air that has been drawn northwards
into southern England from southwest Europe.
"Indeed, in this past summer only five other days have surpassed the reading of 27.7C.
"Since the university's weather records began over 100 years ago, the
highest temperatures reached in the town later in the year than 12th
was in 1926.
"This is the only day this late in the year that has been warmer than today - although on the 11th in 1919 the town reached 30.3C.
"The highest September temperature for any day of the month in the university's record was one of 31.7C on 7 September 1911."
