Five Guys – founded in 1986 – is an immensely popular fast food chain, originating in Washington DC and eventually expanding overseas to the UK in around 2013, writes Jazmine Watts.
I visited this Oracle based restaurant with my ravenous co-workers today (August 24) to celebrate National Burger Day, simply expecting a McDonald's type fast food experience.
Wow was I wrong.
In the beginning I felt somewhat apprehensive about the large, red neon signs and ostentatious colour scheme of the restaurant.
As soon as we delved further in however, I noticed the clean and classic seating area, made from real wood and not some cheap plastic substitute.
This really balanced out the look and atmosphere of the restaurant with a touch of authenticity.
After some deliberation, I ordered the double bacon cheeseburger and an Oreo milkshake - because if you're going to fall off the wagon from your lacklustre diet, you might as well do it in style.
There was just something totally fantastic about biting into that greasy burger for the first time. The bacon was crisp and the wide range of different toppings made the texture varied and interesting. Certainly better than regular fast food burgers which often appear strangely textured, like they have been squeezed out of a tube.
Eating through those patties made me forget, just for a few minutes, how very unhealthy it was. All totally worth it until after the meal when I had to roll back to the office.
The milkshake can only be described as a beautiful, dairy based heaven, thick enough to hold upside down over my head without dripping.
Although the combination of burger and milkshake was perhaps a tad too rich for me, I would definitely go back to Five Guys for lunch. Especially if I were out in Reading with friends looking for an unhealthy and satisfying lunch.
