A COUNCILLOR who died last month was made an honorary alderman last night by West Berkshire Council.
Marcus Franks, who represented Newbury Speen since 2003, died from bowel cancer at the beginning of April.
His family and friends were present at a full council meeting on Tuesday May 21, at which a minute’s silence was held.
Carol Jackson-Doerge, the outgoing chairwoman of the council, said the title of honorary alderman was given for ‘eminent service to the district council and work and support in the local community’.
Ms Jackson-Doerge said: “He went over and above the a councillor’s normal duty, and he thoroughly deserved to have this recognition bestowed upon him.”
Graham Jones, the previous leader of the council, said: “He was a good friend and a dedicated public servant.
“He was a guy who rolled up his sleeves and got on with the job with purpose and determination.”
Councillor Lee Dillon, the leader of the Liberal Democrats in the council, worked with Mr Franks at Sovereign Housing and was close friends with him.
Cllr Dillon said: “Marcus’s role in West Berkshire has been immense. Marcus could and would talk to everybody, in a manner that would make you enjoy his company.”
