Major plans for more than 200 homes at the former power station and SSE building on Vastern Road have been submitted.

Berkeley Homes is proposing to build 209 homes in a series of buildings at 55 Vastern Road and has submitted plans to Reading Borough Council (RBC).

Plans to transform the old power station also include a cafe and a pedestrian walkway from the Vastern Road site across to Christchurch Bridge.

Fifty-five Vastern Road is one of 13 buildings in Reading locally listed by the council.

The eight new buildings - including the cafe - would be between one and 11 storeys high and are named after the history of the area.

Sixty one-bed flats are planned, along with 137 two-bed flats and 12 three-bed flats.

The provisional names for the buildings are:

  • The Turbine Hall
  • The Goods Warehouse
  • The Generator
  • Christchurch Wharf
  • The Railway Warehouse
  • The Coal Drop Building
  • The Goods Office
  • Thames View Cafe

The scheme - called The Old Power Station - would be opposite the planned up to 950-home development at Reading Station Shopping Park.

Berkeley Homes has adapted the scheme half a dozen times, after holding several pre-application discussions with the council and the Design South East panel.

There was also public exhibitions to get views from people in the area.

55 Vastern Road was originally built for Reading Electric Supply Ltd in the late 19th century, changed hands through different power-generating companies throughout its history.

The site was left empty when SSE moved to offices at 1 Forbury Place, also on Vastern Road, in 2016.
