POLICE in Weymouth stopped two cars yesterday, only to find out the drivers had travelled from Reading, saying they "felt like a drive."

The drivers had travelled more than 100 miles on April 9 just to get to the place where they were stopped.

A spokesman for Weymouth and Portland Police said: "We are pleased to say that the vast majority of drivers and their passengers were conducting reasonable and essential journeys and we would thank all residents adhering to the governments advice.

"Two vehicles stopped were conducting non-essential travel with one vehicle travelling to Weymouth from the Reading area, a round trip of over 200 miles, as they ‘felt like a drive.’

"Although we would normally welcome tourism with open arms in Dorset (and we look forward to doing so in the future) at this time it is important that we all stand together resolutely to stop the spread of COVID-19.

"The advice from the government is clear – Stay at Home, Protect the NHS and Save Lives."
