AN IMPORTANT message has been relayed through a heartfelt song created and performed by a talented local musician.

Adam Bennett, who goes by the artist name Benza, decided to bravely tell his story in aid of Suicide Prevention Day last week (September 10) and created the song 'Speak' to recognise the international day, which raises awareness of suicide and ways to support people who are struggling.

Adam, who grew up in Reading, said: "I unfortunately have suffered many traumas from childhood and many bereavements in my life - losing my dad, two uncles and grandad in the space of a month.

"I then lost my nan, who brought me up, and another two uncles and then sadly my only other sibling - my brother Lee, who was my best friend.

"A few of these were from suicide and most were from addiction which seemed to plague all the men in my family.

"I have a past of self harming, which I have scars from.

"After the death of my dad and brother, I too fell in to an addiction of alcohol and substances and became homeless.

"On my journey I have witnessed five close friends commit suicide, including my ex partner.

"After all this loss in my life I managed to get in to rehab and do my brother and everyone proud and now have beautiful accommodation and am glad to say I am coming up to two years alcohol, substance and nicotine free, and have not self harmed since the years of addiction."

Reading Chronicle:

In 'Speak' Adam reflects on the importance of seeking help with mental health issues and suicidal thoughts.

He hopes that it speaks to others going through similar issues, and inspires them to seek help and talk to people.

"I am truly grateful for this", he added.

"As I can now write and perform my music and tell my story, which will hopefully one day inspire others who do not see a way out."
