Areas in the town centre, as well as addresses in Earley, Shinfield, Sonning, Woodley, Goring, Newbury, Theale and Calcot (RG1, RG2, RG4, RG6, RG8, RG18, RG30, RG31), have been affected.

A military style operation last night saw Thames Water workers rushing to get as much water out to residents.

Drivers queued up to pick up their emergency supplies to see them through until the water comes back on.

Thames Water has issued an apology online.

On the website, a statement reads: "We're really sorry if you have no water or low pressure.

"Our engineers are investigating and working hard to get supplies back to normal as quickly as possible.

"We're sorry if you were affected or are still experiencing problems – we know how annoying and inconvenient this is.

"In the meantime, we’re looking for the best place to hand out bottled water in case you need emergency supplies.

"We'll post again as soon as possible to let you know where we'll be.

"We'll always aim to have your water back on within 12 hours.

"If we don't, you could be entitled to an automatic payment."

The company has said it will update residents as soon as possible.
