A READING doctor has been honoured by the Queen for her work in response to the coronavirus pandemic.
Dr Fiona Marston has been awarded an OBE (order of the British Empire) for her work in response to covid-19 at the Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine (LSTM).
According to the LSTM, throughout the pandemic she worked with “researchers and clinicians to develop and help deliver innovations and trials that have been of benefit to people within the UK and throughout the world."

She said: “I am extremely honoured to be receiving this award as part of the Queen’s birthday list. Working to ensure that excellent research can be translated into tangible benefits for those who will benefit most has been my passion throughout my career.
“While this has been a difficult year for so many people, it has shown that when science and industry work hand in hand we can make amazing things happen.”
Dr Marston is not the only Reading-based expert to receive an honour from the Queen.
Dr Emma Vaux, a consultant and physician at the Royal Berkshire NHS Foundation Trust, received an OBE for services to medical education.

Professor Azra Ghani, of the Imperial College London, was also given an OBE for their work on infectious disease control and epidemiological research.
Prime Minister Boris Johnson said: “The Queen’s Birthday Honours allow us to pay tribute to all those who have gone above and beyond in their service to this country.
“Throughout the pandemic we have seen countless examples of every day heroes. From those using their expertise to help develop life-saving vaccines, which are now being rolled out successfully to all parts of the UK, to the people who have given time and energy to care for their communities.
“We should take heart from the stories of those receiving honours today and be inspired by their courage and kindness. May they be a reminder of all that we can achieve when we come together as a society.”
