Reading FC centre-back Michael Morrison has said the club will be looking to improve on their final league position last season when the new campaign gets underway next week.

Crystal Palace are the final pre-season opponents on Saturday before the Championship campaign begins with a trip to Stoke City on the following weekend.

Speaking after the pre-season draw with Charlton on the weekend, the 33-year-old told the Reading Chronicle that his sights are firmly set on reaching a top-six spot.

"Goal wise, I think that you have got to look at the play-offs," said Morrison.

"We were all gutted we missed out last season, it was a tremendous year and fun to play in but it tailed off towards the end.

"There is no reason why we can't take that one step further.

"With players like Andy Rinomhota and Josh Laurent, they're a year more experienced, they are asking and demanding more from everybody and that will go through the team. 

"There is a really good foundation at the club, there is a good core group that works really hard and have got some tremendous talent."

"We have only lost two [first-team players this summer].

"Yakou Meite being injured is a really big blow. I really like him and he gets lots of goals for us so it's a lot of goals missing, as well as Michael Olise leaving.

"But hopefully we can get Swifty (John Swift) on the pitch a lot more this year."
