The following cases were heard at Reading Magistrates’ Court

May 19

PAUL GOSHERON, 51, of Caribou Close, Woodley, admitted to driving a vehicle whilst unfit through drugs on Bath Road in Sonning on March 19, 2020. He also admitted to failing to give information relating to the identification of a driver when required in Reading on July 14, 2020. He was banned from driving for three years, fined £500, made to pay a £50 victim surcharge and ordered to pay £150 court costs. 

JACOB MANNING, 18, of Howth Drive, Woodley, admitted to possession of a imitation firearm in a public place, namely an airsoft shotgun, on Friar Street in Reading on March 16, 2019. He was discharged conditionally for 12 months, told to pay a £21 victim surcharge and ordered to pay £85 in court costs.  

JACOB OAKLEY, 19, of Beancroft Road, Thatcham, admitted to criminal damage of a window in Thatcham on March 20, 2021. He was discharged conditionally for 12 months, made to pay compensation of £100, ordered to pay a £22 victim surcharge, and told to pay £85 in court costs. 

JAMES MAUGHAM, 25, of Chestnut Crescent, Reading, admitted to assault by beating in Reading on May 30, 2020. He was discharged conditionally for 12 months and made to pay £100 in compensation.

JAMIE MCFARLANE, 29, of Calcot, Reading, admitted to using threatening behaviour to cause a person harassment or distress  in Calcolt on May 27, 2020. He was fined £500, made to pay a £50 victim surcharge, and ordered to pay £200 in costs. 

SHANE HARRIS, 21, of Litton Road, Reading, admitted to assault by beating in Reading on May 31, 2020. He was told to carry out 50 hours of unpaid work, pay £94.70 in compensation, pay a £95 victim surcharge, and ordered to pay £85 in costs. 

JOHN VEATER, 32, of Drake Way, Reading, admitted to causing criminal damage to a property in Reading, namely a helmet visor, body cowling, front flasher light unit and a rear view mirror of a motorcycle to the value  of £304.84, on October 3, 2020. He also admitted to assault by beating in Reading on the same date. He was made to pay £500 in compensation, told to pay a £50 victim surcharge, and ordered to pay £85 in costs. 

May 20

RICHARD LEES, 47, of Northway, Newbury, admitted to using threatening behaviour to cause racially aggravated harassment or distress in Newbury on May 19, 2021. He was fined £180, told to pay a £34 victim surcharge, and made to pay £85 in court costs. 

May 21

JAMAAR STEWART, 31, of Grovelands Road, Reading, the driver of a car, admitted to failing to provide a specimen for analysis at Loddon Valley Police Station on August 24, 2020. He was made to carry out 150 hours of unpaid work, pay a £95 victim surcharge and pay court costs of £650. He was also banned from driving for 20 months. 

EMMANUEL OWUSU, 36, of Oxford Road, Reading, admitted to causing criminal damage to a mobile phone in Reading on August 1, 2020. He also admitted to using violence to secure entry to a premises, and to assault by beating on the same date. He was told to carry out 120 hours of unpaid work, made to pay a £95 victim surcharge, and ordered to pay £85 court costs. 

A fundamental principle of justice is that it must be seen to be done. Open justice is acclaimed on a number of grounds: as a safeguard against judicial error, to assist the deterrent function of criminal trials and to permit the revelation of matters of interest.
