FOUR takeaways, two food stores, and a pub in West Berkshire have all been told major improvement is necessary to make sure food is safe to eat.

West Berkshire Council’s food hygiene team inspected the following establishments, giving them a mark of 1, on a scale of 0-5, where 5 is best.

NEWBURY

The Gun on Andover Road has been told major improvement is necessary to ensure its food is safe to eat and to improve cleanliness and the condition of the facilities.

PANGBOURNE

The Laughing Halibut on Whitchurch Road was inspected in March last year and was told major improvement is necessary to make sure that food sold is safe to eat.

THATCHAM

The Pop Inn Cafe on Bath Road’s management gave inspectors little confidence that they appreciated food hazard and control measures and no food safety system.  The café gets a 4.5 rating on Trip Advisor with customers reporting enjoying ‘a great breakfast in a lovely atmosphere’.

Lina Tandoori on Whitchurch Road was told it needed to improve on hygienic handling of food including preparation, cooking, re-heating, cooling and storage and majorly improve on checks and systems to ensure food is safe to eat.

Szechuan Express on the High Street was told its handling of food was generally satisfactory but the cleanliness and condition of the building and facilities needed to improve to enable good food hygiene.

Costcutter on Sagecroft Road was ticked off for not demonstrating that staff knew about food safety.

HERMITAGE

The Premier Store at Hermitage has to improve hygienic handling of food as well as hand washing and pest control. It was considered poor, with some major non-compliance with statutory obligations.
