Friends of Shaun Keywood, a Broad Street Mall regular who died aged 49, delivered 144 presents to a children’s ward in his name today (December 24).
Dozens of Reading residents donated almost £1,500 to pay for Shaun’s funeral, but after Reading Borough Council took care of the arrangements, donors paid for a Christmas surprise at the hospital he died in.
Everything from baby dummies and colouring equipment to dolls and beauty products were delivered to Royal Berkshire Hospital, in Reading.
“I’m very excited and happy that our little Shaun will make some children happy this Christmas,” said friend Ira Forina-Ridgwell.

“I cannot imagine how terrible it must be to be in hospital over Christmas especially as a child. If this helps put a smile on their faces then it will have been worth it.”
Asked what Shaun would have thought of the idea, Ira said: “I think he'd be shocked and maybe speechless for once. Then he'd just add ‘think I need a beer!’"
Shaun was known for his positivity and jokes while keeping tenants of Broad Street Mall company.
He passed away on October 21, just as his friends were planning his 50th birthday celebrations.

“Shaun had no family so we stepped in. He was a lovely, friendly man who kept us all company for years. Nobody should die nameless.
“The generosity of the donations prove he was loved everywhere. Not just the mall. This has spread his name.”
Around £90 has been kept aside to commission a commemorative plaque for Shaun.
His funeral will be held on January 10 at 9.45am in Reading Crematorium.
Flowers for the service have been donated by Cherubs Floral Design.
