US singer Meat Loaf, best known for his album Bat Out of Hell, has died aged 74.

His family announced the news on the star’s Facebook page today (January 21) after he passed away last night.

“We know how much he meant to so many of you and we truly appreciate all of the love and support as we move through this time of grief in losing such an inspiring artist and beautiful man,” they wrote.

“We thank you for your understanding of our need for privacy at this time.

“From his heart to your souls, don’t ever stop rocking.”

On his last ever tour, Meatloaf played his greatest hits at Newbury Racecourse in 2013 - named 'Last at Bat - Farewell Tour to Rock'.

The two-act show included hits like Dead Ringer For Love and I’d Lie For You (And That’s the Truth), followed by a second act of the classic debut album Bat Out Of Hell, with all seven songs performed in their original order.
