CLIMATE change activists took to the M4 to spread the word about pollution this morning (January 29).

Members of Extinction Rebellion Reading attached the banners to the bridge near Shinfield as drivers headed towards the town centre, for a day, bearing the slogans ‘climate emergency'.

They also positioned a banner next to the railing which said 'all-new roads go to hell'.

Danni, a member of the XR group said: "We're not saying don’t use the roads because we know everyone relies on them but we don’t need any new roads. There is a plan for 50 new transport roads. New roads bring more cars and so by one side we’re saying yes we’re in a climate emergency, get out of your cars and on your bikes, do what you can and do your bit -- and they’re turning around and spending £27 billion on new roads - that makes no sense whatsoever.

"Active transport is not supported and I am talking to my friends and they say ‘well we don’t feel safe cycling because there are so many potholes' that our current roads aren’t well maintained enough. So why are we going ahead and ploughing money into more roads which will bring huge carbon emissions with the traffic that it will bring and the actual build of it?" 

The group also assured they put 'safety first' as the banners were attached using cable ties.
