Reading Ukrainian Community Centre have been “overwhelmed” by donations following an appeal.
The centre, on Sidmouth Street, have been at the heart of the town’s fundraising plans, and announced on Monday, February 28 that they will be open on Sunday, March 6 to collect items.
These include large/medium backpacks; warm male socks; camping mats; sleeping bags, blankets, protein/energy bars; painkillers; anti flu meds; wound dressing materials; first aid kits; baby food; nappies/sanitary supplies; toothbrushes/toothpaste.
However, without these future donations, the centre is already being swamped with goodwill from residents, with current staff “unable to cope.”
Posting on their Facebook page, they said: “Thank you so much for your donations but we've been overwhelmed with kindness and generosity from everyone and are unable to cope at the moment.
“We are talking to the British Red Cross about setting up a way to get the aid across and maybe asking the local Oxfam shop to help us sort the donations.”
This has been met with an incredible response, with many followers having offered their services to help sort the donations.
