A new sushi restaurant looks set to takeover a closed chain phone shop in Reading town centre.

A planning application has been submitted to turn the closed Carphone Warehouse shop in Broad Street into a Wasabi sushi restaurant.

The chain, which has a number of locations in London, Oxford, Cambridge and Birmingham, is known for its range of  fish, chicken and vegan sushi, hot ‘bento’ takeaway boxes, soups, salad bowels and more.

Plans for the Wasabi in Reading show 14 seats inside, with a six seat table, a four seat table and four high chairs with a view onto Broad Street.

It is not the only sushi restaurant that has been announced this year either, as Japanese chain restaurant Intoku is due to open in nearby Chain Street in the near future.

The unit Wasabi hopes to occupy is sandwiched between Primark and The Oracle shopping centre.

Carphone Warehouse closed its shop in the town centre in April 2020 during the first coronavirus lockdown.

The phone shop’s owning company Dixons Carphone announced it would be closing all Carphone Warehouse standalone stores and consolidating them in Currys PC World, a brand Dixons Carphone also owns.

Now, the Carphone Warehouse is trading out of the Currys PC World store in Reading Gate Retail Park.
