A last-minute Tom McIntyre winner was enough to overcome Sheffield United, who thought they had earned a point with an 89th minute equaliser.
Here are our player ratings.
Orjan Nyland: 7- Made a string of saves late on to keep the Royals in the game, but over the course of the game was rarely tested.
Andy Yiadom: 6- A typical Yiadom performance, defensively solid and a constant threat going forward, although his crossing was consistently overhit at Bramall Lane.
Michael Morrison: 7- Imperious performance from the captain. Won every header and every tackle, as well as picking up an assist for the last-minute winner.
Tom Holmes: 8- Best performance in a Reading shirt. Threw his body on the line on numerous occasions and won his challenges.
Baba Rahman: 6- First performance under Paul Ince, it was good to see the Chelsea loanee back on the pitch after injury. Offered a strong attacking threat on the left, taking some of the pressure off of right-full back Yiadom.
Danny Drinkwater: 6- Another solid performance for the resurgent midfielder. Had a new midfielder partner but slotted in seamlessly. Put his foot in and did the dirty work excellently.
Tom McIntyre: 8- Another game, another position for the much-loved Academy graduate. A first appearance of the season in midfield, the Reading-born defender had his best performance of the season, topping it off with a last-minute winner, his first in front of supporters.
Josh Laurent: 8- Pushed higher into a number 10 position, Laurent was unleashed, and the Blades could not handle it. A constant driving force behind attacks, his intelligent mind was forever looking to thread balls between the lines.
Tom Ince: 7- Another strong performance from the Stoke City loanee. Full of hustle and bustle, the home defenders could hardly cope with his imagination and link-up play.
Ovie Ejaria: 7- Had a poor game last week but Ejaria looked almost back to his best in the Steel City. Threaded perfectly weighted balls to Lucas Joao all afternoon and was always willing to throw his body and intercept a loose pass. Need to see him playing like that every week.
Lucas Joao: 7- Took his opening goal expertly but lacked the clinical nature to put away a second when he clipped the post. Was willing to put in the defensive work and linked-up well with the midfielders behind him.
Substitutes
Femi Azeez: 6- Solid performance from the Academy graduate. Did not have much of the ball but did nothing out of the ordinary.
Tom Dele-Bashiru: 6- Had 10 minutes and did his job, came on and was bright without being flashy. Ran the hard yards and helped the side drag themselves over the line.
