Around 15 per cent of adults in England live on a street which is holding a Platinum Jubilee street party, according to a poll.

Reading residents will be taking part this year, and our archives have shown they do not shy away from the chance to celebrate a jubilee.

The Queen has celebrated five jubilees, the biggest of which occurred in 1977 marking the silver 25th anniversary of her accession to the throne and in 2012 for her diamond 60th anniversary.

A special jubilee edition of the Chronicle in 2012 showed the town out in force for a variety of Jubilee celebrations.

The Big Jubilee Lunch was held at Whitely Wood Community Centre, where volunteers treated guests to a tea party, quiz, face painting and games.

Olympic triathlete and torchbearer Rachel Bown surprised neighbors in a Coley street party and praised their flotillas and community spirit.

The army joined a family fun day organized by Tilehurst Resident and Community Association in Prospect Park, allowing children to climb aboard a Man SV People Transporter.

Other activities included paintballing, bungee trampolining and petting Siberian huskies.

The Queen, Prince Charles and Jamie Oliver visited Sonning for the annual Scarecrow trail as part of the jubilee celebrations.

Straw, hay and plant-pot versions of the royal VIPs and celebrity chef were propped up in St. Andrew’s Church and families spent the day exploring the village for more than 70 characters.

The Chronicle archives revealed that the Jubilee of 1977 was struck by poor weather – but that didn’t stop Reading.

Residents braved the wind and lashing rain with ice creams, sandwhichs and café to celebrated the anniversary.

Dancers led a carnival procession through West Reading despite a torrential downpour soaking their elaborate costumes.

Police praised residents for "enjoying themselves sensibly without causing trouble.”

“There were very few incidents related to the celebrations,” a Reading officer said at the time.

Indoors, children at Shinfield C. E Junior School acted out the childhoods of Queen’s Elizabeth I and Elizabeth II in a play for parents and friends.

Woodley C. E School crowned 10-year-old Linda Watts the school Jubilee Queen during a festival celebrating Queen Elizabeth II.

Through music, dance and mime, children depicted the events of her 25 years on the throne.

Queen Elizabeth II acceded to the throne on February 6, 1952, and an anniversary (silver) was first celebrated in 1977.

This was followed by her Golden Jubilee celebrating 50 years on the throne in 2002, and her Diamond Jubilee in 2012.

More modest jubilees took place in 1992 (Ruby) and 2017 (Saphire).
