Reports emerged over the weekend linking the former Queens Park Rangers keeper with a move to Berkshire, and a fresh report from Berkshire Live have added that they expect the move to be complete this week.
It is thought to be on a season-long loan after "nearly a month of talks."
Currently away on holiday, it would make the 27-year-old Paul Ince's first signing as permanent boss and his second goalkeeper addition since first arriving at the club in February.
Lumley played almost 40 times for the Teesiders last term, but it is thought that Chris Wilder is after Tom Heaton from Manchester United.
Seemingly after more experience, a report claimed earlier in the month that Academy goalkeeper Luke Southwood has been told he is free to leave the club after a shaky end to the campaign in which he was outsted as number one by Orjan Nyland.
The players are set to return for pre-season training in one week, with currently just seven players signed on past the end of June.
