SEVERAL schools in Berkshire have announced they will be shut or close early next week due to the heatwave.

The Met Office has announced a red extreme heat warning, where record-breaking temperatures are likely to hit 40 degrees on Monday, then again on Tuesday.

A national emergency was declared on Friday, July 15, due to the risk of "heatwave so severe and/or prolonged that its effects extend outside the health and social care system".

This means even fit and healthy people could be susceptible to illness and death - not just high risk groups, The UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) said.

As a result, some schools have decided to remain closed on Monday, July 18 and 19 due to the extreme hot weather.

The official guidance from the Department for Education states: “We aren’t advising schools to close during high temperatures, but school leaders should make sure they take any steps necessary to make sure children are safe and comfortable.”

Furze Platt School in Maidenhead and Altwood School will be closed on Monday and Tuesday.

Garth Hill College in Bracknell have decided to stay open, but pupils will be allowed to continue to attend without their blazers until the end of term.

Summer uniform is in place and allows the wearing of shorts.

The school said: "We have issued advice to all pupils to take sensible precautions in the heat. We are also advising pupils to stay inside on Monday and Tuesday at break and lunchtimes.

"They should stay in the shade, apply sun screen, wear a sun hat if outside and drink plenty of water. Please ensure your child brings a bottle of water to College, that can be refilled on site to ensure they remain hydrated. During PE lessons, pupils will be taking part in less vigorous activities and lessons will take place indoors where possible."
