Veronica Fletcher, founder of Pantry & Larder, said: "Reading is ranked as the 56th least hygienic area in the UK out of 183. This is likely due to it being an urban area and having a large number of takeaways, which tend to have lower ratings.
"For comparison, the neighbouring areas of West Berkshire and Wokingham are rated as 37th and 31st most hygienic areas respectively.
"Chinese takeaways and Indian restaurants are rated as the least hygienic businesses in Reading."
Hygiene standards are rated on a zero to five scale:
5 – hygiene standards are very good
4 – hygiene standards are good
3 – hygiene standards are generally satisfactory
2 – some improvement is necessary
1 – major improvement is necessary
0 – urgent improvement is required
The highest average rating can be found in the Isles of Scilly, with 4.9, and the worst in Birmingham, scoring 3.79.
