A Canadian chain café restaurant known for its coffees, breakfasts and donuts could be coming to Berkshire.
Recently, a plan has been submitted to transform the current Pizza Hut in Newbury Retail Park into a new a café restaurant.
This would clear the way for Tim Hortons a chain that was founded in Ontario, Canada in 1964.
Since then the chain spread throughout Canada and the USA, opening its 2000th restaurant in the year 2000 and spreading to the UK in 2017.
It is named after Tim Horton, a renowned National Hockey League player, and is now one of Canada’s best loved brands, with over 4,500 locations in the maple leaf nation to date.
As well as coffees, teas and breakfasts, it also serves up burgers, wraps and donuts to hungry diners.
Tim Hortons is listed as the ‘proposed occupier’ for the old Pizza Hut unit.
It currently has 56 locations in the UK, with more coming down the line and the proposed Newbury restaurant its first foray into Berkshire.
The planning statement for the application states: “Tim Hortons is a relatively new entrant to the UK market and can best be described as a restaurant chain with a coffee and bakehouse offer.
“The Tim Hortons offer is different from that provided by the likes of McDonalds, KFC and Burger King and is comparable to that provided by coffee shop operators such as Costa or Starbucks, with a substantial part of the offer comprising hot and cold beverages and bakery goods.
“The hot food offer includes paninis and ‘melts’ as well as hot sandwiches and wraps, again similar to other coffee shop operators.
“Tim Hortons also places great emphasis on the ambiance of its café restaurant facilities, encouraging customers to dine in.”
Works on the Pizza Hut unit would involve building a single storey extension to make the unit larger, replacing the existing bin store with a new one and also knocking down a conservatory.
Although customers are encouraged to dine-in, the plan also involves a drive-thru function so people can pick up drinks and food on the go.
There are no Tim Hortons near Berkshire, with the closest café restaurant located in the Royale Leisure Park, West London.
The Pizza Hut in Newbury Retail Park is listed as ‘permanently closed’ Google, with its remaining outlet in Newbury being a takeaway and delivery only location at 125 London Road.

If Tim Hortons does come to Newbury Retail Park, it will be competing with McDonalds and Costa Coffee which are already established there.
The retail park is also home to fashion retailers and other shops such as Next, New Look, Sports Direct and Argos.
It is located in Pinchington Lane, off the A339 to the south of the town.
