The Met Office has issued a yellow weather warning for thunderstorms for London and the South East of England. 

The weather warning is in place from midnight until 3 pm on Thursday, August 25.

The national weather service has said that thunderstorms and heavy rain could cause some disruption.

This is what to expect from the weather warning and the areas affected.

What to expect from the Met Office yellow thunderstorm warning

  • There is a good chance driving conditions will be affected by spray, standing water and/or hail, leading to longer journey times by car and bus
  • Delays to train services are possible
  • Some short term loss of power and other services is likely
  • Possibly some damage to a few buildings and structures from lightning strikes
  • Some flooding of a few homes and businesses likely, leading to some damage to buildings or structures

The Met Office has added that outbreaks of heavy, thundery rain are likely to develop and move across east and southeast England from the early hours of Thursday.

It also added that 10-20 mm of rain is likely over quite a large area but with some embedded thunderstorms some sites are likely to see 30 to 40 mm in 2-3 hours and perhaps 50 mm or more over 6 hours.

There will also be an additional hazard of Lightning. 

In the warning it added that "the area of rain is expected to ease from the southwest before clearing into the North Sea during Thursday afternoon."
