Armed police descended on Newbury following reports of a group carrying weapons.

The gang are believed to have been in The Nightingales and Greenham Road areas at 10.22pm yesterday (September 9).

Officers were accompanied by a police helicopter.

Thames Valley Police will enact a Section 60 order at 5pm today (September 10), which allows officers to stop and search people without reasonable grounds.

This order will last for 24 hours, and covers the following areas:

  • A339
  • Racecourse Road
  • New Road
  • St Mary’s Church
  • Pinchington Lane
  • Newbury

Reading Chronicle:

Inspector Craig Burchall based at Newbury police station, said: “We have enacted a Section 60 order following this incident last night.

“The order allows us greater powers to Stop and Search people on the street.

“Members of the public are likely to see a greater police presence in the area and we would advise anyone with any concerns or information to please raise them to one of our officers.

“No arrests have yet been made however an investigation is ongoing.

“We would also ask anyone with information regarding this incident to please call 101 quoting reference 2053 09/09/2022.
