The fire happened between J12 (Theale) and J11 (Reading), and is causing tailbacks towards Bracknell/Wokingham.
A worried mother got in touch with the Chronicle about the traffic delays.
The resident who lives in Chard, Somerset said her daughter and two year-old grandson have been stuck on the M4 motorway since 11.30am this morning.
"My daughter lives in Reading and we were expecting them for lunch. It's a nightmare for her as the little one is stuck in his car seat this whole time. I tried to contact Highways England but I just get an automatic reply," she said.
The Reading mum was hoping to get to her mother in Somerset to take her son for a day out in Forde Abbey where he can see the fountain and horses.
Her mum said: "When I last spoke to my daughter about 10 minutes ago, my grandson was crying and very upset. It’s just dreadful."
Highways England have been contacted for a comment.
