One of Reading’s MPs recently visited a community centre that is becoming a hub for people seeking help and warmth amid the cost of living crisis.
Matt Rodda, the Labour MP for Reading East, visited the Weller Centre to discuss the impact of the cost of living crisis on neighbours.
The Weller Centre is located is at the heart of the Amersham Road Estate in Caversham, which provides a a community fridge, bakery and affordable café service to neighbours.
It has also recently been designated as a ‘warm-bank’, where people can go to socialise and keep warm this winter amid sky-rocketing heating costs.
During the visit, Mr Rodda called for increased donations to The Weller Centre foodbank, which has regrettably seen a decline in donations.
Supermarket wastage donations have also reduced recently as best-before dates have been phased out, meaning that food stays on supermarket shelves longer.

Mr Rodda said: “The team at the Weller centre are doing an incredible job of helping people in these difficult times.
“Families and pensioners are under enormous pressure from the cost of living crisis.
“The Government should be doing much more to help at this difficult time.
“I want to thank local charities for doing what they can, and I am very grateful to local residents for donating food and other items.”
Reading’s other ‘warm-bank’ is at New Beginnings charity base in the Queens Arms, Great Knollys Street.
