A German Christmas advert featuring a 12-year-old Berkshire girl has received over seven million views online.

Budding star Sophie Ainsworth, from Newbury, plays a key role in popular German supermarket chain Kaufland's Christmas advert.

The advert, titled 'Der Zaun' (translated to 'the fence'), depicts two neighbouring families of different classes dealing with prejudice and discrimination in a tale of two children seeking friendship.

Reading Chronicle:

Speaking about her sudden fame Sophie said: "It feels crazy.

"It is unbelievable because I knew what to expect from an advert but to think so many people have watched this, it is absolutely crazy.

The Reading Chronicle asked Sophie about her favourite parts of the advert.

"Definitely the bits where we are playing outside.

"We did loads of scenes on that. Where I was reading a book to him and then playing a game.

"It is very sweet and I love the meaning of it.

"It is definitely a good Christmas advert plot, it is about overcoming borders and prejudice and accepting people for who they are.

"And coming together, especially at Christmas."

Reading Chronicle:

The filming took place over a week in July, when Sophie and her family were flown out to Bulgaria to shoot the advert.

"I got to miss a week of school which I am very happy about," Sophie added.

Back in the UK Sophie has been watching this years Christmas adverts and has disclosed her favourite.

"This year I have looked through all the Christmas adverts and I think the best one this year that made me smile is the Asda one 'Have your Elf a Merry Christmas'.

"I really enjoyed the O2 wifi one, it was very sweet."

Sophie has been attending a Theatre School since she was age five and is currently staring in High School Musical with her school and Greece with the local theatre.

Asked about any secrets behind the production Sophie revealed that the snow was not as it seemed.

Reading Chronicle:

"The snow wasn't actually snow, it is not a cold country.

"For the falling snow, they used bubbles.

"For the ground snow, because they wanted to be environmentally-friendly filming in the mountains, they used potatoes and paper."

Sophie also revealed the contents of the present handed over towards the end of the advert - a Yo-Yo that eagle-eyed viewers may catch a glimpse of early on.

Sophie's mother Catriona Reeves said: "I could tell that this was going to be a very special advert from the time I spent sneaking a peek at what was happening on set and in the production office, but I’ve still been amazed by the reaction it has received.

"Kaufland has a reputation for excellent Christmas commercials, and its Star Wars-themed 2015 advert gained international attention, but watching the YouTube views clock up into the millions has been beyond my expectations.

"Friends and family tell us that they have been moved to tears when they’ve watched the advert, and have been quite blown away by Sophie’s performance.

"Her agent told me before the first audition that Sophie would be perfect for this role, and she was absolutely right."
