A Woodley couple celebrating 60 years of marriage have revealed their secret to a longlasting marriage - and it's all down to compromise.
Lena and Michael Iremonger are celebrating their milestone diamond anniversary today (Thursday, March 16), after meeting at the Hatch Gate Inn in Burghfield, Reading, as teenagers.
Lena explained that she would stand outside while her parents were in the pub - the same pub that Michael's mum happened to visit too. Lena said that Michael's mum went home to tell him about the lovely young lady that stood outside, and Michael went to see for himself.
The couple spent most of their married life in Woodley before moving to Wokingham two years ago. Their family has expanded as they have two daughters, four grandchildren and three great grandchildren.
Sharing the secret to a long and happy marriage, Lena said: "We compromise all the time", then Michael joked: "We bumble along".
Lena added: "We had the best of the best being born and married in the 60s. I worry about people nowadays. We had a great time [at their wedding]."
Michael spent his life travelling the world, changing tires for Formula One racing. He met all the drivers and his hero was British racer Jim Clark. The couple have visited the Jim Clark museum in Scotland several times.
Lena got a taste for books after working at WHSmith one Christmas. She then went on to work at Blackwell's books in Eton, supplying books to schools.
The couple are celebrating the milestone by having a dinner party with close family. "I'm so excited", Lena said.
Lena and Michael are excited to recieve their telegram from The King to celebrate the occasion.
