POLICE are encouraging any individuals who plan to protest the coronation this weekend to contact them ahead of time.

King Charles III will be crowned this weekend (Saturday, May 6) at Westminster Abbey and celebrations are expected across London and the Thames Valley area including the coronation concert at Windsor Castle on Sunday (May 7).

However, some groups have planned to protest the event such as the Republic group who will be protesting on Saturday in Trafalgar Square, London.

Assistant chief constable of Thames Valley Police, Christian Bunt, has confirmed that police are unaware of any planned protests in Windsor or across Thames Valley but has urged people to contact police if they are planning to protest.

He said: “Whilst the events in Windsor are very different in nature, we’ve not had any protest groups showing an interest in protests in Windsor.

“I’m also very aware of the fact that we could have protests. We will be conscious and fair and responsive and we have lots of experience at Thames Valley Police of supporting and facilitating protests.

“Thames Valley Police respect the rights of those wanting to protest legally and peacefully. I would encourage any individual or groups looking to protest in Window over the weekend to make contact with us at the earliest opportunity.”

A spokesperson for Thames Valley Police added: “We have a legal obligation to facilitate peaceful protest and we will be balancing the rights of any protestors with those who wish to celebrate the Coronation.”
