Dramatic footage obtained by The Chronicle shows the moment a building went up in smoke.

As previously reported, emergency services descended on Friar Street in Reading on Friday after a blaze broke out above CMart supermarket in the town centre.

At the time of writing last night (May 26), firefighters were still at the scene dealing with the incident.

Thames Valley Police said the road and nearby businesses will be closed for 24 hours.

New footage, shared exclusively with The Chronicle, shows the heartwrenching scenes from the sky yesterday afternoon.

Huge plumes of thick, grey smoke can be seen billowing across the town while photographs taken from the ground show the air turning an eerie grey.

The drone footage was captured by Chronicle reader Mariusz Tyszkiewicz.

The cause of the fire remains unknown and it is unclear if anyone was injured.
