A WOKINGHAM mother stands trial accused of heating a metal spatula and burning her young children with it, a court has heard.

The mother, who we have decided not to name due to a section 45 order protecting her children’s anonymity, is on trial at Reading Crown Court charged with two counts of assault occasioning actual bodily harm.

It is the prosecutions case that on December 11, 2021 the mother heated a spatula up on the hob while cooking and burnt her two young boys with it in attempts to stop them from fighting.

However, the mother is expected to say that she had not intended for the spatula to actually touch the boys and was only trying to ‘scare’ them.

A police interview with the mother was read out in court on Wednesday (31). She told an officer: “I t was making dinner for them and they were both fighting over the kitchen fan.

“They were fighting each other, ‘This needs to face me’, ‘No, this needs to face me’. I was making their dinner at the same time and they continued rowing and fighting with each other.

“I wanted to stop them fighting so I took a spatula from the kitchen drawer, I wasn’t actually cooking with that, but I just wanted to scare them like, ‘Look, I’m going to heat it up and put it on you if you don’t stop fighting’ but I just wanted to scare them.

“It had a wooden handle so I didn’t know how hot it was, I just wanted to scare them, it was just unintentional, an accident, it just happened.

“After I did that I didn’t realise….I didn’t know they got burnt. I was feeding him his dinner and he was eating, he didn’t mention it was hurting.”

The mother said the boys had been fine after the incident but in the morning she saw a burn mark on one of the boys, who was six-years-old at the time, which she treated with cold butter and honey.

She added to the police officer: “I took the spatula out of the drawer and I had it on the hob for a just a few…I had no intention of hurting him, I would not do that to my baby.”

It is the prosecution’s case that the spatula would need to have been held on the skin for a ‘sufficient time’ to cause the level of injury caused to the children.
