Coroner Alison McCormick explained that Mr Smith had been diagnosed with advanced rectum cancer and had been in the hospital for a biopsy.
However, during the procedure, Mr Smith suffered from perforation and got internal sepsis.
Ms McCormick said: “In light of the fact that this procedure was the direct cause of the sepsis, it’s going to be necessary to have an inquest.”
A date has not yet been set.
