A MAJOR department store in Reading’s town centre has plans to soon host wine-tasting and cocktail-making events if given approval.

John Lewis in Broad Street is one of the biggest stores in the town selling everything from clothes and perfumes to TVs, electronics, and furniture.

Now, the company has submitted a licensing application to Reading Borough Council to sell alcohol on and off the premises.

John Lewis already has permission to sell alcohol in its cafe restaurant and on the shop floor, which is routine at the chain stores across the country.

However, the consumption of alcohol in store is limited to the cafe restaurant, and does not include the main sales areas.

A spokesperson clarified that the grant of the application would allow the store to hold wine tasting and cocktail-making events on the shop floor.

In full, John Lewis has applied for the sale of alcohol on and off the premises from 8am until 11pm each day.

Each time a licensing application is submitted, members of the public are allowed to comment on them by emailing licensing@reading.gov.uk

The deadline for responses for the John Lewis application is Thursday, September 21.

If anyone makes a representation about a licensing application to the council a licensing meeting will be triggered.
