A MAN has received an extended 15-year jail sentence for ‘slashing’ a man in Reading after a judge deems him ‘dangerous’.

Ervis Kola, 34, of Brighton Road, was found guilty after a trial at Reading Crown Court of wounding Jetmir Noka in Butter Market on December 19 last year.

He has denied the offence, claiming he did not have a ‘weapon’ or anything similar in his hands at the time of incident.

However, a jury found him guilty of the incident and he was sentenced to 10 years imprisonment, with a five-year extended licence, by Judge Emma Nott on Wednesday (September 6) at the same court.

During the trial, the jury heard that the pair, both from Albanian, had first met a month before when Kola allegedly held a knife at him and his cousin for ‘no apparent reason’.

Prosecuting barrister Neil King said: “Jetmir Noka and his friends were in Costa Coffee and while they were there they saw the defendant who was there with his girlfriend.

“In the last few months or weeks, there had been some disagreements between them. Mr Noka went to speak to Ervis Kola, this is covered by CCTV.

“The two men walked together. Mr Noka has his hands in his pockets clearly, the prosecution say, no threat to Mr Kola.

“Mr Kola produces an implement from his pocket. The prosecution says this must have been a knife due to what happened next.

“He repeatedly stabs and slashes Mr Noka to the face. First into the neck and then a slash right down the nose and face.

“He was then chased off by some of Mr Noka’s friends.”

The court heard Mr Noka needed staples and stitches for the wounds which have left scars.

Sentencing Kola, Judge Nott said: “I accept that the knife was never found…but it was dangerous enough that you could have killed a man in seconds with it.

“The injury to the neck was a grave one. This was carried out in the middle of the day and the CCTV shows the public including one woman walking by pushing a buggy.

“In terms of mitigation, there is little…you haven’t shown any remorse.”

Appearing over video link, Kola was told a parole board will consider if he is eligible for release before the 10 years is complete but only if they find the ‘risk can be managed within the community’.
