Amid local outrage over The Grumpy Goat on Union Street’s closure last Saturday, October 28, a change.org petition in support of the independent business has reached almost 2000 signatures.
The petition calls for those involved in the business’ closure to reconsider this decision and work towards solutions that will save The Grumpy Goat.
As previously reported, Owners Anne-Marie and Charlie Beatty were ordered to close by their landlord and given just seven days to vacate the property.
An update on the petition was posted on Monday, October 30. It urged supporters to write to their local MP to ask them for help.
Petition organiser Joanna Loxton called upon those whose local MP is Alok Sharma, a member of the Conservative party, to remind him that he “represents the 'party of small business'.”
She has also implored members of the public to search for a new venue that could house The Grumpy Goat, asking people to contact the business directly via email with any suggestions.
As previously reported, Labour MP for Reading East Matt Rodda has written to government minister Kevin Hollinrake.
In his correspondence, Cllr Rodda called on the minister for enterprise, markets, and small business to introduce regulations that would protect small businesses.
Regarding Cllr Rodda’s input, Joanna Loxton has prompted supporters to “Thank him for the concern he has shown and urge him to continue the campaign in Parliament to support small businesses.
“Ask him to appeal to the local community for a new home for the Grumpy Goat, and to forward any offers to the GG for consideration. Link in the petition, to show how much support there is.”
In a previous update, Joanna Loxton also urged supporters to contact Reading Borough Council to ask if they have any local knowledge that could help find the business a temporary home.
