A misspelled sign in Newbury has sparked a huge reaction on social media.

The Christmas tree in Newbury’s centre recently sported a large pink banner that read “bought to you by Visit Newbury,” the designer of the sign clearly mixing up “brought” and “bought.”

The sign’s misspelling was “brought” to public attention by Mr John Gotelee, who posted a photo of the banner on Facebook with the caption “spot the cock up.”

Over one hundred people took to the comment section to joke, jeer, and air their grievances regarding the mix-up.

One commenter said: “I would not correct anyone on here, as we do not know if they have some type of difficulty.

“But, when things have been paid for, such as the banner, then you would expect it to read correctly. Where are the proofreaders?”

In agreement with the previous comment, many questioned why the maker of the sign had not picked up on their mistake earlier.

Another user responded: “I used to design and do signwriting, and always checked and double-checked spelling, grammar, and punctuation!

“It's absolutely crucial, and quite unforgivable not to do so when charging for advertising work!”

A spokesperson from Visit Newbury has responded to the backlash over the incorrectly spelled sign.

They said: “We are aware of the spelling mistake on the Christmas Tree banner, which unfortunately was not spotted. We had it changed immediately.

“However, it didn't affect a very successful switching on of the Christmas lights, which saw its highest ever turnout this year.”
