2023 has been a difficult year for businesses, and the great British pub is no exception to the hardships.
Therefore, we would like to pay tribute to some of the pubs that have closed this year in Reading.
The Jolly Anglers
The Jolly Anglers, a riverside pub on the Kennet River, went on the market after having a major renovation in 2022.
As previously reported, following news that the Jolly Anglers was up for sale in June, a ‘Notice of Possession’ was spotted at the entrance alongside the boarded-up doors and windows.
The letter from a Manchester-based company called CG&Co outlined that they had taken possession of the Jolly Anglers and changed the locks.
The Great Shefford
Located in the beautiful village of Hungerford, The Great Shefford Pub was a regular haunt among the community after the current owners bought and renovated it in 2019.
Owners, Joshua and Georgi posted a closure notice on the pub's Facebook page citing ‘challenges following the pandemic’ as the reason for the closure.
The Royal Albion
The Royal Albion pub, Oxford Road, was renovated and re-opened in September last year, after armed police rammed the pub during a drugs raid in March 2022.
Less than a year after it was renovated under new management, the Greene King pub was back on the market with an asking price of £650,000.
