A popular American fast food chain could keep serving burgers, fries, shakes and more until midnight each night.

Wendy’s has been operating from a unit in Reading town centre since June 2021, bringing its tasty burgers and desserts to the town for the first time.

Currently, it closes at 10pm from Sunday to Thursday and 11pm on Friday and Saturday nights.

Now Wendy’s has applied to keep serving food until midnight each night.

Oddly enough, the chain has planning permission to stay open until 2am from Thursday to Saturday, midnight from Monday to Wednesday and until 11.30pm on Sundays.

However, because managers want to keep on selling food past 11pm they require separate licensing consent from Reading Borough Council.

Members of the public are able to comment on the licensing application by emailing licensing@reading.gov.uk.

The deadline for responses is Monday, February 26.

Planning approval for extended opening hours was granted on November 14, 2023.

A condition of that consent was that Wendy’s must also apply for licensing consent to keep selling food after 11pm.

The consent letter states: “This approval does not imply or give favour to the proposal being acceptable from a licensing perspective as venue licensing is considered under separate legislative requirements and in accordance with the council’s licensing policies and objectives.

“As such, any application for licensing will be considered on its own merits.”

The chain has been contacted to clarify the discrepancy between the approved opening hours and the hours asked for in the licensing application.

Wendy’s took over the unit it occupies from the Nationwide bank which closed down in 2018.
