One reviewer described this Reading pub as a ‘hidden gem’
He said: “Such a lovey atmosphere, staff so welcoming and friendly. Food was delicious - best burger, fish & chips we’d had in a long while. A gem of a place that also welcomed our Springer with open arms - highly recommend.”
Another said that the Lyndhurst is a rustic pub just outside Reading Town Centre that cooks its food to perfection.
Valpy Street Bar and Bistro

Valpy Street Bistro, located in the Old Chronicles building on Valpy Street is sure to wow your senses whatever you order, however their fish and chips have been described as the best in Reading.
With its friendly staff and romantic atmosphere, it would be hard to find a fault during a visit to Valpy Street Bar and Bistro.
One reviewer that gave the restaurant five stars, stated: “Very close to the train station but tucked away in a quiet road. Food was excellent (and we're quite a tough crowd to please). Fish and chips was probably the best we've ever had - the fish was fresh and plump, the batter was crisp, the chunky chips were plentiful and delicious.”

The Griffin

Located in Caversham, The Griffin, is a friendly pub with a great atmosphere and a delicious array of food on the menu.
One reviewer who raved about fish and chips said: “I think the Griffin has the best fish and chips in Reading! Absolutely loved it, and the service was so good. Lucian did a great job in welcoming us and helping us with the menu. I would definitely go back again!”
Another added: “Had a lovely fish and chips here, Lucian was our waiter and was fantastic. Really great experience.”
The Elm Tree

The Elm Tree is a quaint traditional pub located on Beach Hill Road in Reading. With its delicious cooked food and quiet ambience it’s no surprise that it was awarded the Trip Advisors Travellers Choice Award in 2023.
The food has been rated highly by past customers despite there being a smaller menu than most establishments.
One reviewer said: “A traditional pub serving delicious home cooked food. The menu is relatively small which is a strength and good to see.
“We had the chicken liver parfait with homemade sour dough bread - outstanding. The panko bread crumbed Brie was also amazing. Then the enormous fish and chips appeared - excellent, and we also ordered the burger 👌
“It was a dark evening so we couldn’t see what looks like a very nice view from the hill top.
As well as excellent food, the service was very good. We’ll be back to add the view to the great dining experience.”
